Internship and Volunteer Programs

Break it Down offers educational opportunities for those interested in learning about and participating in our organization. Whether you are interested in volunteering once to experience first-hand how we operate, want to volunteer regularly, have a classroom of students that could benefit from learning about composting or recycling, or seek a unique or different level of participation, Break it Down is open and interested in your ideas or support.

Are you a teacher?

In fall, 2009 Break it Down offered an “off the couch” activity for the UT-Austin freshman course called “Sustaining a Planet.” Fourteen students helped on various collection days and witnessed first-hand the waste management side of business. For many students, it was their first exposure to composting. If you teach any elementary through college level course and would like your students to have first-hand experience on waste management and composting, contact us about setting up an educational opportunity for your students.

Seeking an internship?

In Spring, 2010 Break it Down initiated an internship program for two students that participated in the “off the couch” activity from the previous Fall. Let’s give it up for Chris Lanier and Cayce Terrill Wilson!

We hold weekly meetings to discuss accomplishments as well as future work. Interns will have the opportunity to gain experience in the full range of our activities: developing the school composting program, business management and operations, weekly collection runs, soliciting new business customers, fundraising and grant writing, etc. Interns have flexible hours, but are expected to be motivated to work on their own. Contact us if you are interested in joining the team!
